Advice for New Teachers Linky

I am linking up with Deb at Fabulously First to share a little bit of wisdom for new teachers.  When I first started teaching, I was talking to a co-worker about a child that was in my class.  I needed to call the parents about some of the behaviors that I was seeing.  She reminded me that the child was someone's baby.  It has always stuck with me.  It meant even more after I had my own kids.  No parent ever wants to hear that their child did something wrong and will get defensive if they hear something that their child did that was not positive.  I try to start my phone calls with positives.  Here is my advice...

I also made this into a poster to hang by my phone.  Every time I have to make dreaded phone calls this will be visible to me.

  1. I received advice along those same lines my first year as well. My mentor teacher told me to always tell parents something good to go along with the bad. I've never forgotten that and it has helped to smooth the path many a time.
p.s. I'm now following your blog as well!

    1. Thanks so much for your message. Yes, I have always been told, "Start with a positive, then the main message, and end with a positive." :)
